Chelsea Decorative Metal Company Has Brought Back Two Victorian Designs to Their Tin Ceiling Line
Written by: Glenn Eldridge
Article Chelsea has been manufacturing and distributing tin ceiling for over 60 years and periodically brings back old original designs. This month they have brought back two victorian designs, which can be found on the website: http://www.Tinman.com The new designs are available on 2' x 2' sheets and the design is also a 2' x 2' pattern. Adding victorian designs is a no brainer according to Glenn "The Tinman" Eldridge who told us, "Victorian designs have always been the most popular, so we decided to add two more designs to our line." Most of their designs come on 2' x 4' sheets, but some do come on 2' x 2'. Also available are sheets 23 3/4" square to fit the grid in suspended ceilings. The suspended ceiling sheet have become more popular because you can now put decorative ceiling sheets into those drop ceilings. The Victorian design came into existence during the 1890s. The designs that followed through the years were Turn of the Century, Art Deco and Americana. All these time periods are still represented in the line of tin ceilings that Chelsea still produces. The material is a tin plated steel which is more rust resistant than the plain steel, but still recommends coating them with a oil-based urethan or lacquer. Better yet paint directly to the sheets with and oil-based paint. The metal has great paint retention. The patterns come in various sizes on the 2' x 4' sheets. There are 6" designs, 12" designs and 24" designs for the various areas one wishes to cover. The 6" patterns work best in small areas such as bathrooms and hallways. They are also best used when a room has lots of angles because the smaller patterns are more accommodating when rooms aren't square. The 24" patterns work best in rooms with high ceilings. The 12" patterns work well in any room. All the different styles can be found in any of the sizes just mentioned. Commercially the tin ceilings have been used mostly in bars and restaurants, but can be found in many other business that are new or that actually used the metal when the various designs were first introduced. Residentially, the tin ceilings were originally used to keep down the cost of construction because it cost more to have a craftsman sculpt the designs in the plaster than to put up sheets with the designs and paint them white so it looked like plaster. Today, though, it is installed because of the decorative factor. It adds elegance to dining rooms and a nostalgic feel to kitchens. Any room can be enhanced but the look of a tin ceiling. Chelsea's tin ceilings also come in various finishes. The plain shiny finish, which allows you to either leave it silver of paint the color of your choice, a copper finish for the earth tone or a hand painted faux finish. The hand painted finishes have many different colors to choose from and adds a wonderful finish to an already wonderful design. Also available are tin cornices, moldings, freezes and a medallion , all made for your tin ceiling needs. Tin ceilings are an inexpensive way to decorate a rather plain looking area. The 2' x 4' sheets are easy to install and one can pick from the many styles for the one that suits them. Chelsea is a family owned business and have very knowledge consultants. They will also do diagrams of the best way to install the sheets. The tin ceilings are an old way to make rooms look attractive and The Tinman helps keep it fresh be adding an old design back into circulation now and then.
