Notes
It is well documented that family involvement in the recovery of a patient while receiving care in a hospital is beneficial and even essential to the speed of their recovery. Therefore supporting the family member in terms of a place to stay, attend and otherwise be with the patient is typical in North American patient rooms. To sustain the aid these family members provide, hospitals have increasingly developed patient rooms to offer substantial family zone accommodations. Where space is at a premium, such as in older renovations which typically have smaller rooms, finding space for family members is tough. Often the best gesture here is a single chair. Using this as the starting point Consoul is intended to elevate the response to this challenge. Inspired by other examples of limited spaces that support long term stays such as long distance airline seating, we set out to take a simple approach to creating value by supporting the activities of family members as they passed time attending to the patient. To do so we developed a wide chair arm that was contoured to comfortably support one’s own arm for long durations. This move was coupled with providing a simple and convenient storage bin built into the inside face of the arm, meant to capture the simple personal objects and devices we find on person, such as cell phones, keys, eyeglasses, etc. As a recliner, this chair made improvements in the activation of the back. The control bar is design to allow the user to grasp it through a natural position of their hand. The mechanics of this control allow it to extend along the arm of the chair allowing the user to grasp the control easily when reclined in any position. The footrest is lever-activated using an extended grip for better mechanical advantage and a soft touch material that is not cold to grasp and durable enough to resist impacts from mobile equipment and door frames. The addition of an adjustable headrest helps to extend the adjustments a user can make to aid in their potential long stay.Additionally, it is possible to recline the chair to a flat plane for use a sleeping surface, like a cot.
