Contractor Comments about JELD-WEN Composite Garage DoorsContractor: Garry StewartTitle: PresidentCompany: International Door AssociationSource: The ColumbianDate: Thursday, August 5, 2004“[Wood doors have become less popular] partly due to the expense and partly because (other types) require less maintenance. The wood doors, you have to keep them painted or finished to keep them from deteriorating or rotting,” said Garry Stewart, president of the Ohio-based International Door Association.“If you use wood on a south or west exposure in the Pacific Northwest, especially if it's a darker color, with the rapid solar gain of the heat, it can deteriorate the patina out of the wood and they fall apart.”Stewart says the resurgence of the carriage house door “started right here in the Pacific Northwest.” Now the trend is nationwide, “and in a residential situation it has taken on a life of its own.” Carriage house doors might include “fake handles, big wrought iron (accents), strap hinges, and other embellishments to make the doors “look rustic, and of the era they're trying to put forth,” says Stewart.
