Amsterdam Pedestrian Bridge

Nominee
The design concept adopted is a pulsating vein, which spreads out the culture from the museum to the whole city and the entire world. The organic red-coloured shape, volume contractions and expansions, where the café and bicycle-repair are inserted, makes the structure alive and dynamic, generating a feeling of continuous flow of culture from the Hermitage.Dealing with a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians, two different solutions to connect the bridge to the bank have been designed: a non-symmetrical solution is presented and, on the riverside opposite to the museum, a fork is obtained. Each side of this fork is designed for a different class of users. The minimum inclination and the curved profile between the two banks allows a total accessibility for any category of users without need of elevators. According to regulations for traffic passage on Amstel, the longitudinal profile creates a waterway which guarantees the passage for any kind of boats, having for a width of 5 m a minimum height of 2,6 m.The irregular and free shape is realized with panels of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP). A composite material comprising a polymer matrix reinforced with fibres. The fibres impart strength and stiffness to the composite. The matrix binds the fibres together in a rigid form so that loads can be transferred between them. It also protects the fibres from mechanical abrasion and chemical reactions with the environment. These panels are linked to a secondary aluminum structure which is connected to the primary structure, made of steel. The sustainability has played a fundamental role in the choice of the material: in fact composite materials guarantee a saving in the embodied energy and CO2 emissions if compared to other materials, such as steel and aluminum, in a number of applications. The use of alternative energies has been treated with great care. Some piezoelectric devices are mounted on the bridge floor and they can generate light if trampled. Also an hydroelectric system is installed in the pylon, using a submerged turbine which works thanks to the river flow.
