Conservation & Restoration of SKH Ming Hua Theological College, AMO Grade III Historical Building

Nominee
This project is the restoration of the 110 years old Sheng Kung Hui’s Ming Hua Theological College, which is a Grade III Historical Building graded by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the HKSAR. It is the restoration of the Main Teaching Block and the Auditorium Block to meet the development needs of the Church. Rather than adding something fancy to the Complex, the project is about making good the structure and adding elements that highlight the structural beauty of the Complex. The College Complex of 2 levels is situated along a steep slope at Glenealy, Central. Teaching Block as the Main Body The main body of the College is where teachings and administrative support take place. Spaces for classrooms, chapel and conference room are redesigned and restructured for the best use of space. The veranda, windows, staircases, all the doors and the main entrance are totally revamped for the best aesthetics, comfort and practicality. Furnishings are all chosen to match with the historical architectural features of the Building.  Methodology and ApproachNo fancy architectural solutions were employed. Design styles and materials were chosen to fit for the project’s original style. It is as if using acrylic paint to restore a Picasso painting while Chinese ink is chosen to restore Zhang Daqian’s works.  Preservation of Historical ElementsAll major historical ornaments, motifs and features, such as the timber windows, veranda balustrades and the colour of the external facade, are restored to its original flavour after carefully studying relevant historical architectural literature. The railings along the verandas and the main entrance of the Main Block were chosen to match with the era the building is from. Practical ConcernsWaterproofing at the roof and reinforcement of the external façade were carried out as part of the restoration. The underground footing was also strengthened for the many more years to come in the future.  LightingConcealed lighting was employed to enhance the character and atmosphere without disturbing the original outlook and its unique style. Special antique style lamps were chosen at selected internal locations to match with the overall design.
