Photographic Gallery

Nominee
Creating a contemporary photographic gallery space with room for a library and photographic archive, in a small village in Petworth, west Sussex. The ground floor needed to be designed for permanent and ongoing exhibitions, whilst upstairs needed to house a very fine collection of 20th century photographs & books from around the world, collected by Paul Arden.rnrnThe interiors needed to be white, light and bright to show off the modern & contemporary photographs exhibited. A long, low shelf was used to sit photographs on, as well as a wall hanging system for temporary exhibitions. Lighting was crucial and handled with extreme care due to wattle & daub interior walls and low, beamed ceilings. Floors were carpeted in light coloured matting to create warmth and calm, whilst the over-all design was a mixture of old and new. A small kitchen leading onto a paved terrace was designed at the rear of the gallery, whilst a bathroom, library, office secondary gallery spaces, completed the first floor layout. rnrnFurniture, kept to a minimum to retain space, was a mix of modern 20th century classics & antique leather chairs. Built-in desks, shelves and cupboards kept the space uncluttered and minimal. Walls were white, accentuating the Tudor architecture, and oak beams were sanded down and oiled.rnrnWhat began as a moldy, dark shop was transformed into a thriving, fun space that was visited by international clients and students alike. The spaces were both comfortable and welcoming, whilst maintaining excitement and intrigue on the eye. rn

She is a member of the Development Advisory Board at the Victoria & Albert Museum, a Committee Member and Ambassador for the Royal Academy and consults for among others, the Design Museum & Yohji Yamamoto. Her work has recently been featured in the New York Times ‘T’ style magazine and the Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine.

Elements of surprise and wit can be found in the studio’s style. Harriet’s work often raises a smile.Harriet guides the design and implementation of a stunning home by helping clients to develop an individual and eclectic style, creating harmony between inherited pieces, art collections, the architecture of the building and their contemporary needs.
