MARIE Kitchen Faucet

Best of 2025
Nominee

Born from a collaboration between the faucet manufacturer BARIL and the fashion designer Marie Saint Pierre, the MARIE kitchen faucet draws inspiration from the simple, sensory pleasure of cooking.

Its key features include a fully customizable design, a distinctive sculptural silhouette, and a one-of-a-kind spheric handle with lever, intentionally imperfect in its form, evoking the organic essence of forms drawn from the earth.

In the spirit of haute couture, each component can be specified in a selection of six finishes, allowing for refined, personalized combinations. Much like assembling a couture garment, users can compose a piece that reflects their own aesthetic vision. A range of installation options further enhances this bespoke approach.

A touch of light is introduced through the Tangelo finish, a vibrant orange shade that evokes warmth and energy, inspired by the hybrid fruit obtained by crossing a mandarin orange with a grapefruit. Rarely seen in faucet design, this bold colour is applied exclusively to the handle’s lever, creating a subtle yet striking focal point.

Sculptural in presence yet functional in purpose, the MARIE faucet is conceived as an object of design. Its elegant lines and materiality allow it to integrate seamlessly into a variety of interiors, from contemporary to classic.

The Design Process

The main objective was achieving an exceptionally slender and elevated silhouette without compromising structural integrity. The faucet features a slim 26 mm (1’’) diameter body with an overall height of 533mm (21’’) with an integrated pull-down sprayhead, all designed as a continuous form with no visible breaks or separations. Engineering a structure of this height and finesse required extensive testing to ensure long-term resistance, particularly given the daily mechanical stress caused by repeated pulling and re-docking of the sprayhead.

Another technical objective was enabling full 360-degree rotation while preserving stability and smooth handling. Ease of assembly and maintenance were also central to the development process. Every component was engineered with installation steps in mind, ensuring that parts were both highly resistant and accessible for servicing when required. Hidden fixation systems were developed to eliminate visible screws, allowing the design to remain pure and uninterrupted.

Ergonomics and installation also played a critical role. Numerous tests were conducted on this ‘’one of a kind’’ spheric handle with lever, to make sure we had the right proportions, intuitive use, comfort and precision. The handle was designed to be separate from the body and placed on the countertop anywhere within a 12’’ distance from the body (spout). This prompted us to also rethink the installation process to achieve this innovative flexibility while maintaining simplicity. Many new, under the counter, components were therefore developed for easy installation and hose management.

Finally, we had to make sure the design followed key technical parameters to facilitate controlled manufacturing, installation and long-term serviceability.

It was through many months of design, prototyping and testing, that we succeeded in bringing this product to life. The silhouette of MARIE is defined by controlled curves and carefully calibrated transitions. The spout, base and handle were proportioned to create geometrical continuity and structural coherence. The internal and structural components of the faucet were also specifically engineered to adapt to this innovative design.
