Lee Residence

Nominee
This is a new house design built for myself. It has 2 major challenges;1)I like and appreciate many different design genres including traditional heritage and clean, minimal design. I wanted this house to encompass both extremes. The exterior architecture is a traditional craftsman style, but the interior has clean and minimal details. This mixture creates a dramatic, yet pleasant surprise as you open the front door.2)The buildable footprint is very small because of the small lot. I needed to provide maximum space efficiency through clever use of materials and custom millwork design. The total area is only 2000 s.f. within 3 levels. In some spaces, traditional stud walls were replaced with millwork to regain the extra 4" of space. Tall slender doors were used to give illusion of vertical height. Open glass stair treads were used to allow flow of light and give visual openess. Skylight was located above the glass stairs to filter light through to lower floor. Use of overhanging vanity sinks allows reduced counter depth. Along with the free-standing bathtub, it gives an illusion of space. Frameless glass used throughout to continue visual openness. Custom millwork design allowed us to get maximum storage efficiency from the small kitchen and bathroom spaces. The bathroom mirrors had cabinets behind for extra storage. The kitchen full ht. wall units houses a broom closet, pantry storage, water dispenser, and even washer/dryer units. A custom wall unit in the living room has dual functions as a divider and guard for the stairs and a bookcase/media unit. The EcoSmart flueless fireplace was used to allow the wall unit to remain open on top and bottom. There was no space wasted from a flue vent. For maximum efficiency, we even used the space behind the tv as a hidden dvd drawer.
