Quebec City Marriott’s soul shines through

Nominee
Flanked by 17th and 18th century stone houses and churches in the heart of Old Quebec, the Quebec City Marriott Downtown is a 7 floor hotel with 11 rooms. As part of a re-branding from its previous Courtyard designation, the well-known chain renovated the hotel interior. They turned to Montreal based Camdi Design to revitalize the space. “We wanted to make an impact on the visitor from the moment they walked in,” said Pierre Brousseau, President at Camdi Design. “We re-orientated the lobby staircase to make it more inviting and introduced a breathtaking chandelier.” The custom chandelier, measuring 54 inches in diameter and 68 inches high, is the feature piece of the lobby. Created by Camdi Design in conjunction with Bloom Lighting Group, it features a series of thin cables supporting a structure of faceted crystal beads that sparkle when the light hits them.Camdi Design also worked with Bloom Lighting Group to light other areas of the hotel. Both the front desk and the bar are illuminated with clear glass pendants, brightening areas that are clad with darker wood wall panels. The Que Sera Sera Resto-Bar is the main dining area, where hanging candelabras provide an interesting design feature. Orbited with matte black wrought iron rings, they are suspended with adjustable metal chains. The six 40 watt lamps in each cast a warm glow and create spoke-like shadows from the rings onto the low ceiling. The table lamps in the lounge area have a classic shape, and like the wall sconces that can be found in corridors and in the bistro, sport a plated gold finish metal shade that helps to maintain the warmth of the hotel while infusing a modern element. On the mezzanine level, the concierge lounge offers a relaxed atmosphere overlooking the lobby. Its focal point is a cluster of three circular pendants made with contrasting pleated black fabric shades and white opal acrylic diffusers. More of the plated gold finished metal shade sconces provide complimentary accent lighting. “We’re happy that we have maintained the soul of the hotel while bringing a modern feel to it,” said Brousseau. “The lighting elements we have used provide warmth and impact throughout.”Designer: Camdi Design, Montreal, QuebecPhotography: Peter Ford Photography
