Renovations at Shea and Durgin Halls

Mats Inc.
For approximately 700 first year students attending Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Shea and Durgin Halls are the epicenter of college life, offering 5 floors each of dorm rooms, study lounges, common areas, a kitchen and a laundry facility throughout 156,000 square feet.Built in 1967, Shea and Durgin Halls have housed decades of Bridgewater State students; however, after almost 40 years with only minimal renovations, the Halls’ dorm rooms and common areas were run down and in a state of disrepair. The carpeting throughout the rooms had been replace numerous times and was once again stained and wrinkled, the linoleum in the halls and shared facilities was cracked and peeling and old and broken couches, chairs and gaming tables were strewn throughout the student recreation areas. In early 2000, the University began a three phase project for a complete renovation of Shea and Durgin Halls that was completed in 2006. Leslie Saul, President of Leslie Saul and Associates, in association with Pfeufer Richardson Architects were commissioned to design new dorm rooms and common areas with a warmer and more welcoming feel.Ms. Saul began with an analogous base color palette to create a pleasing and comfortable space that would promote collaborative experiences. She selected shades of yellow, orange and red, and then added fresh accents colors that would appeal to young adults, such as plum and avocado. With such a distinct color palette, Ms. Saul then focused her attention on finding a flooring solution that would be easy to keep clean, durable enough to withstand continuous foot traffic and of course, complement the design direction.Mats Inc. Architectural Specialist David Cassady introduced Leslie Saul to Panorama flooring, a FloorScore certified rubber tile with hard-wearing and stain resistant attributes. As an exceptional alternative to carpet, Panorama Rubber was an easy decision for the experienced designer with its underfoot comfort, extreme durability to accommodate the newly- added pool table, washers and driers, exceptional acoustic qualities to minimize noise in the dorm rooms and active common areas and ability to create completely custom color. Ms. Saul mixed up Panorama custom color using Mats Inc’s online design tool, Mixology®. Because of the extremely low minimum square foot quantity for custom color, she was able to create not just one, but four custom colors that would further enhance the design. In 2011, a washing machine overflowed and flooded both the laundry and recreation rooms. Dean Clapp, Maintainer II of Shea and Durgin Halls, removed the water and was able to easily clean the floor; no damage was done to the Panorama flooring. These photos were taken in January 2012, after the 2011 flooding. It has been more than 6 years since Panorama rubber tiles were installed and the flooring still looks as good as new.
